In addition to serving civic groups and athletic endeavors, the Big Walnut Country Club was a social gathering place for members, festivals, pageants, and public events.
As a COUNTRY CLUB, it was run on dues and memberships, and placed promotional ads in the local African American newspapers. The advertisements and articles provide insight to the facilities, activities, and amenties of the club.
One of the most prominent events at the Big Walnut Country Club was the BATHING BEAUTY contest and dance. In 1952, 1953, and 1954 the beauty pageant grew into a day-long summer festival.
Folks from the Columbus and Gahanna communities have shared some of their MEMORIES of the Big Walnut Country Club, remembering sights, smells, sounds, and special occassions.
